One hundred years ago, Albert Calmette and Camille Guérin started to continuously subculture a Mycobacterium bovis strain isolated from cow’s milk. During this procedure, which lasted over 13 years and was not even interrupted by the First World War, the virulence was lost and the M. bovis strain became what is today referred to as Bacille de Calmette et Guérin (BCG)
